Cushions are the final touch in decoration. As much in the living room as in the bedrooms, they bring personality to your home. It also allows you to renew the space depending on the season of the year you are in. You can play with patterns and different textures in each season, using light colours and light fabrics in the warmer season, and thicker fabrics with lighter colours providing more warmth and comfort in the colder months.
But… What is the best way to place the cushions on the sofa? There are several ways to arrange cushions, you don't have to stick to one way. You can change the style to create a slightly different look whenever you want and keep your decor interesting and fresh.
Here are 5 tips for decorating with cushions to put into practice when it comes to placing cushions on your sofa.
- Start at the ends: put one on each side and then join them together in the middle.
- By size: the larger ones should be at the ends of the sofa, or at least at the back if you have more than one row of cushions. Always look for balance because overloading the sofa with cushions can make it look smaller or even reduce the size of the living room.
- Sofa size: the size of the sofa is something you should always consider. Normally you can choose more cushions than seats, for example: if the sofa is a two-seater you can put three cushions and for three-seater sofas, four cushions.
- The colour: like everything else, this depends on personal preference. They don't have to be the same colour as the rest of the decoration in your home, neither do they have to be the same colour as the sofa, but if you decide to go for different tones, try not to use more than three. If you want to play it safe, go for tones in the same palette as the sofa.
- Prints: as with colours, you can mix several, but with a certain discretion. The important thing is that you only place together those with very different prints, for contrast. A trick is to place both prints together and close your eyes a bit until you can see them blurred. If you can tell them apart, you can put them together. If you get them mixed up and confuse them, move them away from each other.
The styling you give the cushions should be the icing on the cake, so have fun with the process and enjoy the result!
And best of all, if you don't like the result, change the arrangement as many times as you need to.
